Rustic gear for The Modern Adventurer

We know that the modern adventurer spends most of their time away from the outdoors so we build products that allow you to stay connected with nature. Our handcrafted goods are made for life as you live it – whether at school, in coffee shops, on day hikes, or on the adventure of a lifetime.

Timeless Beauty  //  Lasting Design

Our vintage-inspired goods are uncompromising in their beauty, functionality and durability. We handcraft everything ourselves in Seattle, WA. Each piece is influenced by the wilderness and designed to help protect it.

Connect with nature

At Uphill Designs, we believe that the gear we use in nature reflects our attitudes towards it. Our products evoke the feeling of the trail: natural materials, burned logos, and classic designs leave a hiker yearning for the simple beauty of the woods and the smell of a campfire.

Who we are

At Uphill Designs, our vision is to return nature and adventure to the heart of outdoor equipment, while supporting the wilderness we love. To give back, we've partnered with the Pacific Crest Trail Association to directly support trail maintenance. Their mission is to protect, preserve and promote the PCT as a world-class experience for hikers and equestrians, and for all the values provided by wild and scenic lands.

HandCrafted // Seattle Made

We handcraft every piece of gear in our Seattle workshop. Uphill Designs is committed to continuing and growing upon the long tradition of Seattle innovation and manufacturing. We are members of Seattle Made, an initiative to grow and support urban manufacturing and producer economy in the Seattle area. Members of the initiative produce anything from bikes to beer to biodiesel. We collaborate with other local producers and manufacturers to find and share resources, facilities, and ideas.

Dan founded Uphill Designs after thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013. During the 2,665 miles, he carried a tent and pack he had sewn himself. He was given the trail name Uphill for his love of steep climbs and breathtaking views. Dan now uses his M.S. in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Washington to create hiking equipment perfect for the trail. Outside of the workshop he also loves to climb cliffs all over Washington.

David is the numbers guy. His favorite hike is the Na Pali Coast trail in Hawaii.  He helped co-found Uphill while earning his MBA from the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. He now splits his time between creating sustainable hiking equipment, working for a Seattle management consulting firm and growing the best kale in Seattle.

Mallory is the lead strategist and marketer at Uphill Designs. She joined the team after completing a Masters of Science in Bioengineering with a focus on Global Health Diagnostics from the University of Washington. She loves exploring the back-country of Glacier National Park and takes her camera wherever she goes. When she is not cutting and tanning leather or writing press releases she loves to teach yoga and make chocolate-centric desserts.

Oliver is the company intern. Whether there's poles to be packaged, packs to be sewn, or improvements to be made to the website, he gets them done. As a Seattle native, he is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in informatics at the University of Washington. When not in class, he enjoys hiking, biking, and playing Ultimate Frisbee for the University of Washington Sundodgers.
